The functional parts of  Best 18V cordless drills are…

The Power Source – Drills run od AC and DC power There are corded and cordless drills. When they are corded you have constant power and unlimited runtime. Cordless drills have batteries that have to be charged.

  • There are 4 – 8-volt drills for light screw-driving and working on delicate materials.
  • The 12-volt drills are compact and light but do 80% work the heavier professional drills can do.
  • There are 18- and 20-volt drills for heavy-duty work. They are lightweight and preferred by professionals.
  • The 36-volt drills are rarer but more powerful.

Best 18V Cordless Drills

Battery Chemistry

There are Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. These are obsolete and replaced by the more efficient Li-ion batteries.

Trigger

Other than 4 volt and 8-volt batteries all other drills have variable power. This means you can pull the trigger and increase the amount of power and speed of the tool.

Rocker switch

also known as the Rotation direction slide. In the initial position, the drill would be rotating in the counter-clockwise. If we push that slide in it would begin turning clockwise. The screw is driven in using this position.

Gear selection switch

There is an inverse relationship between the speed and torque on the drill. This means higher the speed, lesser the torque. In position 1 – this means high power and low speed that is ideal to drill hard materials. When you slide the switch down you expose the number 2. This setting would offer high speed and low power. Some drills have 3 or 4 gears that are chosen from the electronic controls above the battery. They may even be connected via Bluetooth to your smartphone.

Clutch/Mode Collar

There is a rotating collar behind the chuck. This allows you to pick a torque setting – lower the number lesser than the torque. It is important to note here that these are just marked positions where the motor connects to the drill end of the tool.

This turning collar sets the tool in a drill-driving mode…

You see the icon of the drill bit lined with the marker. This shows there is a direct connection between the motor and the end of the drill. There is no slippage between these aligned parts. If the collar is rotated the hammer icon lines up with the marker. You will get a rotation of the drill and high frequency pounding action. This action facilitates drilling masonry.

The final position at the end of the circular gear is to the right of the hammer setting. It has got numbers on it – 1 – 3 – 5 – which are related to driving screws in the drill driver mode. You can automate this process of driving screws.

Chuck – This is a type of clamp that holds an object with radial symmetry. on a drill, a chuck holds a rotating tool like a bit. There are keyed chucks but the more popular ones are the keyless chucks. To open the chuck rotate it clockwise and to tighten it turn counter-clockwise. The metal prongs tighten around a drill bit or grab the tool you have fitted – do the job. Some chucks produce a ratcheting motion. When you tighten it on to the bit you hear clicks for extra firm tightening. This secures the bit on the chuck.

Motor – This part drives the tool. There are two types – brushed and brushless motor. Look for a brushless motor. Though more expensive they bring you greater power, longer runtime and tool life.

Best 18V Cordless Drills

20V Vs 18V Cordless Drills…

A lot of people wonder which drill to buy – 18 volts or 20 volts? From the sound of it – drills fitted with 20V Max batteries seem more powerful. But there are many similarities and differences between these products. 18-volt batteries were thought to give the best performance until the 20V Max batteries were unveiled.

A lot of tests and opinions later the debate on which is better continues. Here is the truth about 18 volt and 20-volt batteries. On taking them apart one realizes that they are designed the same way. They both have single battery cells arranged in groups of five – wired in series.

Each of these groups of 5 cells is wired in a parallel arrangement. This arrangement ensures a larger number of amp hours which gives it a good capacity in terms of watt-hours. When you look closer you will see that they have two different voltage ratings – nominal and maximum.

Each one of these cells in the 18-volt and 20-volt battery has a nominal voltage rating of 3.6 volts. This translates to 18 volts of nominal voltage when put together. Likewise, each cell has a maximum rating of 4 volts that totals to 20 volts in a 20V battery.

In essence, the manufacturers use the nominal rating to produce 18-volt batteries and maximum rating when making 20-volt batteries. This means that both the batteries – 18V and 20V – produce the same amount of power. The only difference is the cell rating, labels, and advertising.

This translates to – a person using 18V batteries gets the same results as using the 20V one. The moot point here is the design of the tools that may be specifically be designed to work with 18V or 20V batteries. Otherwise to get all the power of a 20V tool in an 18V tool.

Features on an 18V Cordless Drills

Type of drill – There are 2 main types –  drill/driver and hammer.

The drill/driver is used to drill holes and drive screws into plastic, metal, and wood.

The hammer drill is hammer settings that rock the bit on masonry. As they have to break through concrete, brick, and stone they are heavier than drill-drivers.

There are rotary hammers and impact drivers.

Rotary hammers are heavy-duty versions of hammer drills.

Impact drivers are used for loosening bolts and drive screws. You may get one or both as a part of a kit.

Battery options – f18 volt Li-ion batteries offer a higher range of power and last longer. Having two batteries is productive as when one is down the other can be used. When you are using one the other could be charging.  They are more powerful, run longer and stay charged on and off the shelf.

Here is a list of features to consider…

Battery capacity is measured in Ampere Hours (Ah). The larger the battery capacity – 5Ah or more – the longer the runtime.

Battery voltage is measured in volts (V). Usually higher the voltage more the torque produced and better is the drilling performance.

Chuck Size – This is a part pat the tip where the bit is fitted. Usually, there are 13mm chucks to accommodate large bit sizes. There are drills with 10mm chuck sizes too. There are two types of chucks – keyed and keyless. Keyless chucks are preferable as they can be tightened by hand.

Reversible direction – The drill can turn clockwise and anticlockwise. It helps you drill or remove fasteners and screws with a simple change of setting.

The trigger is the speed control on the drill. Most drills have variable speed control – from zero to full RPM. Good control at low speeds is important when driving a screw or drilling a surface. The tool has a range of gears that help you get desired results while doing different tasks on metal, tiles or wood.

Torque Selector/Clutch – prevents the snapping or the overdrive of the screw. It should slip when the turning force gets too high. This stops the drill head from turning. Usually, a tool with a wide range of clutch settings is useful.

Work light – is an onboard LED light that offers illumination in dimly lit or dark spaces.
