Top 15 Best Brushless Drills in 2020

What is Brushless?

Initially, drills had motors with four parts – the carbon brushes, armature, magnets, and commutator. They all work in tandem with each other to operate the drill. Brushless motors have a slightly different design. They do not have the commutator and carbon brushes. This eliminated friction between parts extending their life and generating less heat.

Working of The Brushless Drill

A brushless drill has four parts – commutator, armature, magnets and carbon brushes. The movement of these parts produces a drilling motion. When the trigger is squeezed it sends an electric current from the battery to the carbon brushes.

These brushes are spring-loaded into the commutator. The charge is then passed on to the armature with copper windings. The armature is situated next to the magnets. The armature is charged by the current from the battery.

The magnet carries an opposite charge compared to the copper windings on the armature. These opposite charges collide to turn the motor. This keeps the drill functional until the power is on. Brushless motors function differently as they have only the magnets and armature.

Best Brushless drills have…

The carbon brush and commutator are eliminated. When you squeeze the trigger, the charge goes from the battery to the armature via a circuit board. This makes a noiseless, quick and smooth connection. Brushless drills have motors with controllers.

These controllers transform DC into a three-phase variable frequency current. The motor coils generate a rotational field due to this current. There is a fixed stator with coils and a mobile rotor with permanent magnets. This arrangement produces 10000 RPM in the motor.

These motors are complex due to their unique design. The larger the number of rotors the higher the torque produced.Three control algorithms operate the brushless motor. They are the vector or field-oriented, a trapezoidal and sinusoidal commutation. The control algorithm is the combination of hardware, i.e., the circuitry and the control software. The software is the program that operates the motor.

Brushless drills Versus Brushed

Depending on your application requirements you may be able to gain additional efficiency by choosing either a brushed or a brushless motor. Brushed motors have simplified wiring. They can be wired directly to DC power and control can be as simple as a switch.

They are also less expensive than brushless motors. However brushed motors are less efficient. The switching action of the commutators constantly makes and breaksinductive circuits that make electrical and electromagnetic noise.

Brushes and commutators also wear out due to being in perpetual physical contact with the shaft. On the other hand, brushless motors tend to have a longer lifespan as they have no brushes to wear out. This also means there is less maintenance required as there are no brushes to replace.

They are also more efficient than brushed motors, typically featuring 85-90% efficiency compared to 75 – 80% of brushed motors. This difference in efficiency means that more of the total power used by the motor is being converted into rotational force rather than being lost as heat.

However brushless motors have a higher initial cost as they require a commutating device such as an encoder and a drive or a controller.

Benefits of  best Brushless Drills

These drills have a brushless motor that makes the transition easier. These drills can sense the material better thus a better investment. When it comes to regulardrills, they treat all materials with the same force. But the brushless drills can differentiate the levels of hardness.

It is the circuit board that makes all the difference. The motors communicate with the armature via these circuit boards. They allow the tool to calibrate the power required to do the task. It controls and minimizes the power consumed. This controlled output also prolongs the life of the tool.

Brushless drills are stronger…

Brushless drills are stronger because their design is built up in the motor area, unlike the brushed ones. This makes them more powerful, quieter and long-lasting.

They are compact and smaller than the brushed drills and weigh less without sacrificing power. There are fewer breakdowns as there are no brushes and parts that wear out. As there is no friction they do not overheat. The overall design extends the life of the motor.

The brushless motors circuitry modulates the power via sensor. It modulates the power requirement depending on the material’s resistance. This feature conserves power and is the basis of the cordless drill design that runs on battery.(we have also  written a comprehesive guide about the finish and brad nailers ).

The permanent magnets on the rotor, the copper windings on the stator and the circuit boards work together to produce higher speeds. The work is done and the battery power used is 10 – 20% more efficient.

Features on A Brushless Drills…

Here is a checklist of essential features on a brushless drill.

Voltage – The power of the drill is indicated by its voltage. The higher the voltage indicated the more powerful is the drill.

Heavy-duty drills – Drills with 18 – 24-volt batteries are brawnier than the others. They bore holes through thick boards and drive large fasteners. They are fitted with 1/2-inch chucks and accept most drill bits to work on concrete blocks and bricks. These are the heaviest and the most expensive.

General-purpose drills – Drills with 12-volt batteries are powerful. They can drill holes through wood and drive a pouchful of screws on a single charge.

Light-duty drills – Drills with 6 – 12 volts are classified in this category. They are ideal to change a light fixture, drill drywall, assemble flat-pack furniture, etc. They have relatively small motors thus do not drive with the same power as the big brothers. The other limitation is that they have fixed 1/4-inch sockets that accept only 1/4-inch hex bits. Yet they are useful to have around the house.

Torque – It is the twisting force a drill can apply on a work surface. It is measured in Newton-meter (Nm) or pounds. Usually, the voltage rating indicates the total power of the drill. If you are working on wood or plastic you don’t need to worry, as most drills are calibrated to work on these surfaces. However, if you are working on metal, concrete, vitreous tiles you may need more speed and torque.

Power UWO – Look for the Unit watts Out – this is the new standard to measure the maximum power of the drill. It is the combination of torque and speed. This translates to – higher the UWO the more the power of the drill.

Drive motor – Pick a brushless motor as you can modulate the power, pressure, and torque. And it drives longer without getting overheated.

Chuck size – This is referring to the size of the drill chuck. It indicates the size of the bit or the diameter of the bit shank that would fit the drill. The usual sizes available are 1/4-inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2-inch bits.

A 1/4-inch chuck would do nicely as a light-duty driver.

The 3/8-inch drill accommodates a variety of drills and ideal for work around the house.

The 1/2-inch drill is meant for heavy applications.

Speeds – You can control the speed or the RPM on the drill. It brings you the flexibility to work on different materials.

Dual speed drills are inexpensive and usually have a speed of 3000 RPM. Some models may have two speeds – one for driving screws and the other for drilling.

Variable speed drills have an adjustable clutch that offers versatility to work with different materials and bits. You can use them on softwood, metal, hardwood, and masonry. All these materials require different torques and speeds. When you work on hard materials you will require low speeds, larger bits, and more torque. When you work on softer materials you need higher speeds, smaller bits, and low torque.

The trigger of the drill controls the speed.

The clutch can be set to the desired torque. An adjusted clutch prevents you from driving the screw too deep. This also prevents the possibility of striping the head of the screw or snapping it.

The gearing switch allows you to set the drilling gear to high torque and low speed or vice versa.

Keyless clutches – Some drills have clutches with keys. These are required to loosen or tighten the bits. There are keyless chucks that can be tightened or loosened by hand. If you change bits frequently – keyless chucks are ideal.

Batteries – Most drills have a detachable Lithium-ion battery. They are supplemented by an extra battery that prevents a break in the work schedule. There are voltage-changing batteries that run the tool according to your power usage. This way the charge lasts longer and so do the batteries. Some manufacturers make tools where the batteries are interchangeable.

A charging stations an inductive charging dock. It works on the principle of alternating magnetic fields to charge the tool.

Other features such as a built-in light and level help install fasteners quickly. An adjustable side-handle helps gain a better grip on the tool. Some manufacturers complement the drills with bits and other accessories.
