Top 15 Best Miter Saws in 2019

best miter saws

best miter sawsAny workshop is incomplete without a best miter saws. The best miter  saw allows to make accurate miters and crosscuts in the wood by pulling a backsaw or a mounted circular saw down onto a board. The abrasive cut off saw and miter saw are commonly called chop saw or drop saw. The best miter saw’s blade is mounted on a swing arm that pivots up, down, left and right. You can make quick, clean and efficient cuts to make window casings, door frames, crown mouldings, picture frames, etc.

In the standard position, the blade is at 90° from the work surface. The workpiece is held against the fence that steadies the piece while delivering precise cuts at an angle. The primary feature on a miter saw is the index that allows the user to choose the angle of the blade in relation to the fence. Most best miter saws are marked like a protractor to the index with quick settings to common angles such as 15°, 22.5°, 30°, and 45°.

Types of Miter Saws

There are several types of best miter saws

The original miter box and saw consisted of a wooden or plastic 3-sided box with 45° and 90° slits to guide the saw to make miter cuts.

The power or standard miter saw was designed for making straight cross cuts on a workpiece at a wide range of angles.

The compound best miter saw has a head with a blade that can be rotated at various angles. This allows delivering more complex cuts such as the ramp-angled cut used in trim work.

There are single and double compound best miter saws. In the single miter saw the head rotates when angled to one side. One requires flipping the board to get a similar cut in the other direction. The dual miter or double miter compound saw has a rotating head that turns to the right and left.(we have written extensively for the best generators brands)

The sliding compound miter saw has a movable head that goes back and forth on a rail slide. The user can cut an extensive range of boards delivering a wide variety of cuts using this saw.

The laser or LED guided miter saw deliver more precise cuts. The laser is mounted on a disc-shaped washer attached to the saw blade. It illuminates a line and the blade cuts along this path. The LED on the saw illuminates the work area.

Parts of a Miter Saw explained

Hitachi C12RSH2-3The latest best miter saws have a laser guide that provides a precise visual indication of the position and direction of the cut. The guide may be a single reference line on the side of the kerf or two lines on both sides.

The saw’s teeth are covered with a blade guard. Recent designs also have self-retracting blade guards. These guards retract automatically when the saw is lowered to the workpiece. They remain retracted while the cut is being made and fall back when the setup is raised. The guards protect the blade and the user, from damage and accidents.

A dust bag is connected to the saw in such a way that it directs the flying sawdust away from the blade and collects it in the bag. Some models have adapters to connect a vacuum cleaner instead of the bag  simplifying disposal.

A safety clamp locks the workpiece into position before making the cut. This is a vital feature when working with small pieces of 8 inches and less. The work table is usually 24 inches with stabilizers to be steady it and make a clean cut. The design of the miter saw prevents a kickback as it is held stationary against a fence. The only moving pieces are the head with the saw and the miter index.

The safety features of the saw are its mechanism, firstly it allows hands to be kept clear of the saws edge. Besides the head is drawn back and then lowered to feed forward and cut through the material.

The sliding compound miter saw is portable and easy to set up. It is robust and maintains accuracy even while moving around. As this tool cuts from above, it is not necessary to adjust the blade depth for different thicknesses of workpieces. Just set it up and repeat the cuts.

Most drop saws have adjustable scale plates for table swivelling. The miter index has adjustable stops at 45 and 90 ° for tilting the head and repeated cuts easily. The table swivels in both directions.

In most saws, the head tilts in the counter-clockwise direction. In some models, the head tilts in both directions. The workpiece is held flat on the table, such that the table swivelling will produce an angled or miter cut. Rotating the head produces a bevel cut while the combination of the two produces a compound cut.(we have written a guide for choosing the best dual fuel generators)

Best Miter saw blades are made of carbon steel and come in two diameters – 10 inches and 12 inches. These may also be coated and optimized for short cuts to cut across the grain of the wood. All the blades are marked with their diameter, the number of teeth, hook angle and kerf. There may be 24 – 100 teeth on a blade  larger the number of teeth the finer but slower the cut.

DEWALT DW713-3The kerf is the amount of material removed while making the cut. The 1/8 inch is the standard kerf but there are thinner options to cut finer wood. The hook angle indicates how aggressively the blade will pull at the material. A negative or low hook angle causes little board movement while cutting unclamped boards.

The three common teeth designs are the flat top grind(FTG), the alternating top bevel(ATB) and triple chip grind(TCG). Each is designed for a specific edge treatment and material. Thearbor bolt holds the blade of the miter saw the 12-inch blade is fixed using a 1-inch bolt and the 10 inches with a 5/8-inch bolt.

They are reverse-threaded and turn clockwise to be removed and replaced. It is designed with a reverse thread so that the rotational motion of the saw only exerts a tightening pressure on the blade. This prevents the bolt from loosening and flying off  injuring the user (we have also  written a comprehesive guide about the finish and brad nailers ).

Features on a Miter Saw

Hitachi C10FCH2-3The features to look for on your best miter saw

The amperes measure the power of the motor. The higher the amps the more the cutting power of the saw.

The blade size is important as larger the blades, larger the cuts. The blade diameters are 8, 10 and 12 inches.

The positive stops mark the index at specific angles. These are thumb-activated stops for quick adjustments and precise cuts that reduce the set-up time.

The depth stopshelp adjust the height of the blade and depth of the cut into the workpiece.

The articulated blade guardscover the blade while the saw is not in use. When the saw is raised the guards retract to reveal the blade for a better view of the cutting line.

The electric brakes reverse the flow of electricity to release the trigger and stop the blade.

The shaft locks immobilize the shaft and blade, for a safe and easy change of blade.

The dust chutes and blowers move the sawdust from the work area.

The dust bags collect the sawdust. (we have also  written a comprehesive guide about the Best Brad Nailers)

The table extensions  support the longer stock to deliver an accurate cut.

The slide and flip fences support the taller stock while making the standard miter and bevel cuts.

The laser guides or guide lights as described above.
