Top 10 Best Propane Generators in 2019

best propane generators

best propane generators

The generators that run on propane are known as best  propane generators. They may be single fuel or bi and tri-fuel. When they are single fuel, they are fuelled by propane only.

When bi-fuel they may run on propane and gasoline or propane and diesel. When tri-fuel, they may run on propane, diesel and gasoline. Propane is a hydrocarbon with 3 carbon and 8 hydrogen atoms (C3H8) in its molecule. Water boils at 100°C and turns into steam. While propane boils at -42°C to become vapour. Propane is called Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) because it is pressurized into a gas cylinder. It turns back into vapour when the pressure is released. Thus, the mechanism that facilitated its use is in the extraction from the cylinder in which it is supplied. Most applications and appliances such as water heaters, generators, cookers use vapour.
In its natural state, it is colourless, odourless and looks like water. Thus, for safety, a smell or an odorant is added to the gas so that a gas leak could be detected. This gas is extremely flammable. In the event of a leak ensure there are no flames or sparks and static electricity in the vicinity, and also allow thorough ventilation. Propane is heavier than air thus sinks to the floor, ensure a proper dispersal of the leak by opening all windows and doors.

Why is Propane used as a fuel?

Propane burns readily with oxygen and has a high energy content. It burns at 1980°C with a blue flame. This means it also burns clean and completely leaving behind only carbon dioxide, water and heat. The heat powers the internal combustion engine. As the engine turns the generator produces electricity. There is 25MJ (Mega-Joules) of energy in one litre of propane. The base unit is Joule  it is the unit of work. And energy is required to do work. A Mega-Joule is a million times a joule. Gas consumption is expressed in Mega-Joules per hour (MJ/hr). This translates to how much gas consumed or work (in MJ) was done in an hour (in this case, turning the engine in RPM).25MJ per litre converts to 6.9kWh. A kWh equals the amount of energy required to run a 1000-watt appliance for an hour. This means, on 6.9kWh you can run this appliance for 6.9 hours  on one litre of propane. A twenty-pound tank contains 9.0718litres of propane. This means you can achieve a runtime of approximately 9 hours per tank.

How does a propane engine produce electricity?

There are two types of fuel injection systems for propane – liquid and vapour. In both the types, propane is stored in a tank in the liquid state. In vapour injection systems the propane travels through a hose into the engine. Here the LPG is converted into vapour via a regulator. While in the liquid injection system the liquid does not vaporise till it reaches the fuel injector. This allows for a more precise fuel delivery which improves fuel efficiency and engine performance.

Propane generators basically work same as the others only with slight modifications in the carburettor or the engine. The other difference is instead of a fuel tank that is filled with gasoline or diesel apropane tank is attached via a hose. The rest of the assembly works exactly like the other internal combustion engines. As the engine turns at 3600 RPM, electricity is produced.

How efficient are best propane generators?

The general review is that propane is the cleanest, gasoline is the most convenient and diesel is the most powerful. The consumption of propane is 3.44 GPH (gallon per hour) while gasoline is 0.75 GPH and diesel is 2.9 GPH. These figures mean that you will burn more propane than the other two fuels to produce the same amount of electricity. But the pros of using propane are many.

Such as propane has a high-octane rating than gasoline, i.e., 104 – 112 compared to the 87 – 92 for gasoline. This high-octane rating also makes for higher horsepower. It is minimal maintenance due to low carbon and contamination characteristics, improving engine life. As the air and propane mix entering the combustion chamber is gaseous there is no need for an enriched fuel mix as in liquid fuels. This also reduces the cold start problem.

Propane is C3H8 this means when it burns in oxygen it releases only carbon dioxide and water. This makes it a clean fuel that is safe for the environment and public health. Lastly, it offers energy security as it is found in abundance and in easy supply to use as tanks. Due to an excellent infrastructure, tanks can be refilled or exchanged at a depot at affordable prices. They have a long shelf life this means you can store them.

How quiet  best Propane generators are ?

It is not the fuel type that makes the generator quiet but the  inverters  have  a compact design, use a smaller engine and an acoustic cabinet that reduces noise levels. The acoustic cabinet or body-casing is insulated with noise attenuating materials that absorb it. Inverters ensure stable power at 300 sine waves per engine rotation. The three-phase AC power is converted into DC which is inverted into 120V at 60 Hz of AC power. This power has minimum total harmonic distortion that makes it perfect for your sensitive electronics with microprocessors in them.
