Cordless drills can be a great choice for all your drilling projects. Not only are they portable but they come with a lot of great features. However, you will want to ensure that your drill is well charged before you can use it.  If the handy tool goes out of charge in an area where you don’t have a charger, you may be wondering how to charge a drill battery without a charger.  Here are some of the options to consider.

  • Create a series connection

Before you can start charging your cordless drill, you will need to gather certain supplies. One of these is the connectors. You will want to ensure that you have the necessary electrical connections to which you will be connecting the batteries. The connectors may either be wire pieces. However, you want to ensure that they stick to the battery’s end.

You will also need to get several batteries. The exact number of batteries you will need depends on the voltage of your drill battery.  For instance, if you have 18 V cordless drills and the batteries available in the market have 1.5 V, you will need 12 batteries. Simply divide the voltage of your drill, with the voltage of the battery to see how many you will need.

A series connection refers to a closed connection or circuit where the current flows in a single direction. When connecting your batteries, you will need to create a series connection. Here are the steps you will need to follow:

  • Determine the positive and negative sides of every battery
  • Use a connecting wire to the positive side with the negative side of the next battery
  • Ensure that the connectors are held in place with an electric tape
  • Follow the same steps for all the other 12 small batteries
  • Let the connected batteries create a U-shape
  • Connect the series connection’s side of the positive side to the drill battery’s positive side
  • Connect the series connection’s positive side to the drill’s negative side

Keep the drill connected to the series for two hours. This will charge your battery fast. Make sure that you remain close to the charging station. If there is a strange, smell, disconnect everything. The only downside of charging your battery with a USB cable is that it charges very slowly.

  • Use of a solar panel

It’s possible to charge your drill battery with a solar panel. However, you will need to get a charger controller or battery inverter.

  • Use a clip charger

You can use a clip charger to charge your drill battery and will need to put your battery on the clip charger’s charging platform also can then plug the charger on the power board before switching it on. The one downside of this method is that the charger can be rare to find. However, with the clip battery, you can charge a spare battery, that you can use for backup.

  • Use a car battery

Another good option for charging your lithium-ion drill battery is the use of a car battery. All you need is to connect it to your car battery. But when doing so, make sure you use some small light bulbs to control the current flow. If you are using a lead-acid battery of 13 volts, and you are trying to charge a 6 V drill battery, you will need to use three small light bulbs. Ensure that the three bulbs are arranged in parallel to finish charging. This will provide 0.5 amperes for the battery to be charged effortlessly.

Avoid leaving the battery when charging. You should also not allow it to get to full charge status as this may cause the battery to catch fire. Ensure that you are wearing safety glasses and a mask.

If you like fixing projects around the home, you understand the importance of a drill. A cordless drill is more convenient than a corded drill. However, you will need to ensure that the battery is always charged. If your drill is losing power and you don’t have a charger, you can use the above steps to charge it.
