How to wire a 220 outlet for a welder

As a welder, you will want to ensure that your outlets are properly wired when working. Take note that different types of welders use different voltages. If you are working with a MIG welder of 220 V, you need to understand how to wire 220 volts outlets for a welder. This will enable you to use it for the 220 volts MIG welding projects.

Is the installation of the 220 a DIY project?

If you want the installation to be done professionally and accurately, we recommend that you engage an electrician. However, while the whole process can be hard, it’s not challenging and you can fix it yourself, and save yourself some bucks.

Step 1

You should start by turning off the power in the main power breaker. This will prevent any potential accident. Ensure that you don’t touch anything before switching off the power.

Step 2

Find out the model of the box and go through the instructions keenly. To prevent the risk of electrocution and damage, ensure that you choose the right breaker that will not overload the breaker. You should then break the cover of the breaker. Pull out the wire cable at the bottom.

Some of the other equipment you will need include:

  • 50 amp
  • Two pole breakers
  • 3 prong outlets

Remember that the cables that are labeled in black and white can get hot. However, in a four circuit system, neutral is usually white while the hot one is red or black.

After confirming that the circuit breaker is off, place the two-pole breakers of 50 amps into the box. Ensure that the box can support two-pole breakers and it has the spaces for the two.

It’s time to fix the two gang box on the wall. Make sure you also screw it there.

Step 4

When doing the wiring, you should ensure that the wires inside the receptacle boxes are at least 6 inches. There should be some sheathing that should be exposed in the receptacle boxes.  Use a cable ripper to remove about six inches of the plastic sheath you will be using in the two gang box.

Step 5

In the next stage of wiring a 220v welder outlet, you should use the cable ripper to remove twelve inches of the plastic sheath. This is the key part of the wire to be used inside the circuit breaker.

Step 6

In this step, you need to strip one inch of the sheath of every wire using a wire stopper.

Step 7

One end of the wire should be put inside a circuit breaker box while the other end should be installed in the two gang box.

Step 8

The next step of wiring a 220 V outlet of top-rated welders is to connect the wires. You will need a red, black, and a bare wire. The ground will consist of the bare wire. The 4th wire which is white should be neutral. You will not need to use this, and you should, therefore, use electrical tape to wrap the white wire. This should be coiled up smartly in the two gang box.

Step 9

Ensure that the wire’s tip is non-corrosive so that it doesn’t corrode.

Step 10

You will now need to connect the 3 wires (red, black, and bare) to the receptacle. Ensure that the right wire color is hooked to the right screw. This means that the red and black wire should be connected with the 2-prong terminals while the bare wire should be connected to the ground terminal.

We are now done with connecting the outlet. You can now screw it in place and close the cover. Ensure that the cover is screwed professionally.

Step 12

Connect the three wires to the beaker. Start by connecting the ground wire. You should then attach the white neutral wire as you did in the previous step.

Step 13

It’s time to connect the red and black wires. If necessary, go through the instructions on the breaker to understand the accurate terminals for connecting the wires.

Step 14

You have finished wiring a 220 V outlet for a welder and can now close the circuit breaker box. You can switch on the main circuit breaker and switch on the 50 amp breaker.
